The Atlantic Trail

ROTA VICENTINA – PORTUGAL
2027 DEPARTURES:
- – 3 – 11 May
- – 2 – 10 October
A journey shaped by walking, wind and the steady presence of the Atlantic.
The Atlantic Trail, there is a particular clarity that comes from walking beside the ocean. On Portugal’s southwest coast, the landscape is simple but never empty: wind, cliff, sand, scrubland, whitewashed villages, farmland and a horizon that stays open for hours. The Atlantic Trail is designed around that simplicity.
The Atlantic Trail is not a conventional hiking holiday. We select shorter stretches of the Rota Vicentina – generally around 3.5 to 4 kilometres – so that walking becomes a rhythm rather than an achievement. The body settles into repetition: step, breath, wind, horizon. There is time to stop, listen, speak, photograph, sit or simply continue without pressure.
The journey is based around a small number of places rather than constant accommodation changes. Vila Nova de Milfontes and the landscapes around Odemira and Aljezur provide a natural framework, allowing the group to experience both the coast and the rural life just beyond it.
Local encounters introduce another side of the region: time with people connected to fishing and coastal life, visits to small farms and agricultural producers, and conversations around medronho, honey, food and the traditions of the Alentejo and southwest Portugal. These meetings are woven into the rhythm of the journey rather than presented as attractions to be completed.
Morning Śamatha and evening contemplation frame the walking days without turning them into a retreat. Whenever possible, we practise outdoors – in a garden, on a terrace or overlooking the coast. The landscape remains present throughout, and the journey’s regenerative dimension connects naturally with the stewardship of the Rota Vicentina and the communities that sustain it.
Over nine days, the Atlantic Trail becomes an exercise in reduction. Fewer decisions. Fewer distractions. More walking, weather, food, conversation and horizon – enough simplicity for clarity to emerge on its own.
