The Stone Kingdom

2027 DEPARTURES:

  • – 5–13 June 2027
  • – 19–27 September 2027

A quieter journey through ancient stone, mountain villages and traditions carried across generations.

Not every landscape is remembered for its beauty alone. Some hold the traces of centuries: Romanesque churches standing among mountain fields, monasteries sheltered beneath towering cliffs, and cobbled streets where generations have lived and worked.

The journey unfolds across the Aragonese Pyrenees, from the stone villages of Serrablo and the Valle de Tena to San Juan de la Peña and medieval Aínsa. Romanesque heritage is not treated as a succession of monuments, but as a living thread – a way of understanding how mountain landscapes, faith and daily life have shaped one another for centuries.

Our first days are spent among mountain villages, calm trails and local producers. We hope to meet a winemaker reviving high-altitude viticulture and discover how weather, soil and tradition influence each harvest. Gentle walks between Romanesque churches and conversations with rural families bring us closer to the rhythms of a region where skills and stories are still passed from one generation to the next.

At the heart of the journey, two nights at San Juan de la Peña bring a change of pace. There is time for silence, reflection and the historic architecture sheltered beneath a rock overhang. We then continue to Sobrarbe, where cheesemaking, beekeeping and the medieval lanes of Aínsa reconnect us with the people and traditions of Aragón.

June brings green valleys, wildflowers and long mountain days; September offers softer light and the first hints of autumn. Both departures share an unhurried rhythm. Gentle walks, regional food and local encounters are complemented by morning Śamatha meditation and evening contemplation, often outdoors, where stone, forest and mountain become part of the experience.

The Stone Kingdom is a journey through living memory. Aragón offers a stillness shaped not by silence alone, but by stone, mountain paths, ancient monasteries and traditions kept alive in the hands of local communities.

Be Local exists because of the people who open their landscapes, knowledge and communities to us.
