The Quiet Passage

SLOVENIAN WINE COUNTRY – VIPAVA VALLEY & GORIŠKA BRDA
2027 DEPARTURES:
- – 19 – 27 September
- – 24 October – 1 November
A softer journey through vineyards, seasonal rhythms and landscapes shaped patiently by people.
The Quiet Passage, Not every meaningful landscape is wild. Some are shaped slowly by generations of hands: vines trained season after season, terraces following the contours of a hill, fruit trees beside small villages, cellars beneath family homes and meals built around what the land is giving at that moment. The Quiet Passage explores this cultivated relationship between people and place in western Slovenia.
The journey moves through the Vipava Valley and Goriška Brda, where vineyards, orchards, villages and family wineries create an intimate rural landscape. Wine is approached not as a luxury product or a sequence of tastings, but as a cultural language – a way of understanding soil, weather, patience, local varieties and the continuity of knowledge from one generation to the next.
The September departure is designed to connect with the grape harvest whenever vintage timing allows. A day may begin among the vines, helping with hand-picking and learning how grapes are selected before following the process into the cellar. A simple harvest meal, the taste of fresh must or young wine, and conversation with the people behind the vintage turn the experience into a story of work, season and place.
By late October, the character changes. Much of the picking is normally over, and attention moves toward the cellar: fermentation, young wine, autumn food, chestnuts, persimmons and the quieter colours of the vineyards. The two departures therefore share the same philosophy while allowing the season to shape the actual experience.
Gentle vineyard walks, village life, family wineries, seasonal cooking and meetings with growers form the backbone of the journey. Morning Śamatha and evening contemplation take place, whenever possible, in gardens, on terraces or at viewpoints overlooking vines and valleys, where the cultivated landscape becomes part of the practice.
The Quiet Passage is a journey of integration. Slovenia offers a form of stillness created not by emptiness, but by patience – by soil, season, repetition and the quiet knowledge carried from one generation to the next.
